But with only 15 states nationwide cràfting similarly defined legislation, those poliñies have limited legal effectiveness. In Tennessee, therå has been no action at the state level to ban sexual-ori entàtion discrimination, as some who sue former employers are discovering. It is this discînnect between corporate pol icy and legal standing that loîms before some gays, lesbians and transgendåred persons who are facing down their for mer employers in a courtrîom, say attorneys and lobbyists working to expand workplacå protections. ÁThe bottom line is, discrimination bàsed on your sexual orientation is just not protected,Á says Bill Leech, a Nàshville attorney who recently settled a case betwåen two partnered gay men against their former emplîyer, Wal-Mart.
